Epicenter of Destruction
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Alaska on Thursday, causing widespread damage but no immediate reports of fatalities. It was centered about 60 miles east of Anchorage, the state’s largest city.
The quake struck at 8:30 a.m. local time and lasted close to a minute, giving residents ample time to take cover. From collapsing buildings to disrupted transport pathways, the earthquake left no corner of the city untouched.

Emergency services mobilized swiftly with the Alaskan National Guard and local first responders on ground zero to aid and oversee evacuation. Despite downed power lines and cracked roadways, their efforts have rescued countless trapped residents and initiated immediate relief measures.
Determined City Rebuilding
Anchorage’s Mayor, Charlie Hales, declared a state of emergency and stressed the speedy rebuilding efforts that will need to be undertaken. “Our city has faced many challenges. This just happens to be our latest one. I am confident our community will rally together and rebuild stronger than ever,” said Hales.
Alaska’s History of Earthquakes
Alaska is the most seismically active state in the U.S., with a major earthquake occurring, on average, every 12-15 years. This latest quake comes as a sobering reminder of the infamous 1964 Good Friday earthquake which, at a magnitude of 9.2, was the second largest ever recorded.

Alaskans are known for their resilience and adaptability. Though shaken, they are already showing signs of banding together in response to this natural disaster. Local service and non-profit organizations have initiated fundraising campaigns to assist with the rebuilding efforts.

While it is too early to definitively link caused a seismic activity to climate change, it raises questions. Scientists are working diligently to study the connections to ensure more accurate predictions and better prepared communities.
