A local resident has ignited a contentious, community-wide debate after contacting Child Protective Services (CPS) upon discovering that a couple in her neighborhood is planning to send their young daughter on a month-long cross-country trip with their truck driver friend.
The concerned woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, was prompted to alert CPS after the young girl excitedly shared the impending trip details with her. The truck driver, a long-time family friend of the child’s parents, was planning to take the minor on his usual route from California to New York and back over the span of one month.
The Parents’ Defense
The parents, surprised by the sudden intervention of CPS, stated that this was an agreed one-off adventure that their daughter was keenly anticipating. They further assured that they were going to maintain regular contact with their friend and daughter via calls and video chats.
“This has turned from excitement about our daughter experiencing something unique into a full-blown misunderstanding,†said the father. “She’s been cooped up indoors due to the pandemic. Traveling with a trusted family friend felt like a safe and educational experience for her.â€
CPS Involvement and Investigation
CPS, upon receiving the report, had to act swiftly and investigate before the girl’s scheduled departure. Cynthia Morgan, a CPS spokesperson, confirmed that an investigation was indeed underway.
