A Historic Dive Gone Wrong
“Expedition: Unknown” host and adventurer Josh Gates revealed he dove in a specially designed Titanic submersible, only to decide against a second dive due to the craft’s poor performance. Gates, well known for his daredevil expeditions and treasure-hunting adventures, had planned to film an episode of the popular series focused on exploring the infamous wreck of the Titanic.
Having dived over 12,000 feet below the surface to the site, Gates experienced technical difficulties and less-than-ideal conditions within the submersible during the mission. Concerned about the safety of himself and his team, Gates abandoned the plan to film a second dive at the wreckage site.

Gates shared that the submersible’s outer window seals began to leak during the dive, raising major safety concerns. Additionally, the craft experienced malfunctions in its control system, affecting its steering and stability. Despite these setbacks, Gates managed to complete the initial dive and expressed his gratitude to both the submersible operators and his own production team for their professionalism in navigating the challenges.
The famous explorer also shared his disappointment about not being able to film the highly anticipated episode. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am extremely glad that our team managed to complete at least one dive to the iconic site. However, we cannot compromise our safety for the sake of exploration and unfortunately, the submersible did not perform well enough for us to proceed”.
