The unexpected danger comes in the form of an invasive species of earthworms, known as “jumping worms” or “crazy worms.” These seemingly harmless creatures can grow up to one foot in length and can, quite literally, jump when disturbed. However, the true threat they pose is beneath the soil.
Jumping worms are voracious eaters, consuming plant roots and leaf litter at a rapid pace while leaving behind a nutrient-poor soil that is unable to support the growth of most plants. This not only deprives your garden of its food but also has severe implications on the local environment, impacting the survival of beloved plants, trees and flowers.
Fighting Back Against This Subterranean Scourge
The warning is clear: if you spot any of these invasive worms in your garden, it is crucial to remove them immediately. However, this might not be as straightforward as it appears.
Jumping worms have a unique ability wherein they can break off their tail as a means of self-defense, leaving it to wriggle and distract predators while the head escapes underground. In fact, the abandoned tail segment can eventually regenerate into an entirely new worm, exacerbating the problem.
As a result, it is recommended to destroy any detached tail segments found along with the rest of the worm in a sealable plastic bag. To prevent the infestation from worsening, it is also advised to regularly check your garden for signs of their presence — such as the presence of coffee ground-like soil or large, pale, actively wriggling worms.
