Entering the Pro Wrestling World
Once a bodyguard for Iran’s Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, better known as the Iron Sheik, reigned supreme in the wrestling world during the 1980s. Born in Tehran, Iran in 1940, Vaziri represented Iran in the 1968 Summer Olympics and later moved to the United States where he became an assistant coach for the US wrestling team.
It was not until 1972 when Vaziri entered the world of professional wrestling, taking on the persona of the Iron Sheik. Donning his signature curled boots and mustache, the Iron Sheik quickly rose to fame as one of wrestling’s greatest heels (villains).
Rise to Fame and Controversy
As the Iron Sheik, Vaziri’s villainous and often controversial character tapped into the political unrest between the United States and Iran during the 1980s. He stirred American crowds with his declaration of Iranian dominance and his mockery of the US. The Iron Sheik’s top moment came in 1983, when he defeated Bob Backlund to claim the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Heavyweight Championship.
The Sheik’s championship was short-lived, however, as he was dethroned by none other than Hulk Hogan in 1984, sparking wrestling’s historic “Hulkamania” era. Despite losing his championship, Vaziri’s character lived on as one of wrestling’s most notorious figures.
Personal Struggles and Redemption
Though Vaziri was a household name, he faced his fair share of personal hardships. Struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism, he experienced legal and financial issues throughout the years.
However, after a documentary, “The Sheik,” delved into Vaziri’s life with unparalleled access, it inspired an outpouring of support from his fans and the wrestling community. In recent years, the Iron Sheik has become a beloved figure and social media sensation, with his no-holds-barred tweets and appearances on various platforms.
