Experiencing the American Graduation Spirit

A Russian exchange student expressed her amazement at the warm reception she received from Americans after donning her cap and gown for her graduation ceremony at an American university. The young woman, Natalia Petrovna, originally from Moscow, graduated from a prestigious university in the United States in the Spring of 2023.

Natalia began her studies in the United States three years prior, pursuing a degree in International Relations. Having completed her education, she was all set to partake in the traditional American graduation ceremony. Little did she know that the experience would create memories that would last a lifetime.

Warm Congratulations and Excitement

On her graduation day, Natalia donned her cap and gown and embarked on her walk towards the graduation venue. As she strolled through the streets, she was overwhelmed by the number of strangers who stopped to congratulate her on her achievement. Offers of congratulations were accompanied by bright, warm smiles and genuine enthusiasm, which took her by surprise.

Many people went out of their way to offer well-wishes, even approaching her from a distance to extend their congratulations. Some individuals even asked to snap photos with her, creating more lasting memories of her special day.

Comparing Russian and American Academic Traditions

Natalia found this American tradition a stark contrast to her experiences growing up in Russia, where academic achievements were not typically celebrated by strangers. In Russia, graduation ceremonies are generally low-key events, attended solely by friends and family members, and attracting no attention from passers-by.

She also pointed out that in Russia, it’s uncommon for people to approach strangers and interact with them in the way many Americans do. The outpouring of admiration and warmth she received from people she had never met before was an entirely new experience for her.

Grateful for the Opportunity to Experience American Culture

Natalia felt touched by the kindness displayed towards her, a foreigner, on her graduation day. It allowed her to feel as if she were a part of the American community, despite only having been in the country for a few years.

She views her graduation day as a testament to the American spirit, which is known for its openness and warmth, and for embracing those from other cultures. Natalia is grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this aspect of American culture firsthand and hopes to carry the lessons learned and memories made with her throughout her life.
