Shifting Alliances
In the year 2023, the United Methodist Church split over LGBTQ issues continues to impact congregations around the world. As some worshippers find themselves at odds with their congregation’s stance on inclusivity and acceptance, many are taking action and switching congregations to join communities that align with their beliefs.
The Great Divide
The United Methodist Church’s General Conference in 2022 saw the approval of the “Protocol of Reconciliation & Grace Through Separation.” This agreement allows the denomination to split along theological and ideological lines, primarily over LGBTQ rights, same-sex marriage, and the ordination of queer individuals. Since then, congregations have been making difficult decisions about where they stand and with which newly formed denomination they wish to align themselves.
Finding Their Voice
For many devout United Methodists, switching congregations has become a moral imperative. These worshippers understand the importance of equity and justice, and they desire to be a part of a community that supports the rights and dignity of all. This shift in congregational membership has, in some cases, led to previous members reconnecting with their faith and finding spiritual community and support like never before.

As congregations change and grow, the United Methodist Church’s landscape is beginning to transform. While some churches remain steadfast in their conservative theology, others are actively embracing all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or identity. And as neighbors, friends, and family members take note, it is becoming increasingly clear that the divide within the United Methodist Church is not only affecting policy but also reshaping the very fabric of communities.
Hope for the Future
In the face of conflict and division, hope remains for the worshippers seeking out new congregations. These individuals, driven by a commitment to justice and love, continue to persevere, seeking out spaces where they can worship and serve alongside others who share their values. As a result of the United Methodist Church split, a new phenomenon of congregational migration is taking place — one that ultimately seeks to create a more accepting and affirming spiritual community for all.
