Controversial Figure in Civil Rights Era, Dies at 92
Carolyn Bryant Donham, the woman whose false allegation in 1955 led to the brutal lynching of 14-year-old Emmett Till, has died at the age of 92. The incident and its aftermath, including the acquittal of the two white men responsible for Till’s murder, were significant catalysts for the Civil Rights Movement in the United States.
A Family’s Tragedy Revisited
Emmett Till, a black 14-year-old boy from Chicago, was visiting relatives in Mississippi in August 1955 when he encountered Carolyn Bryant Donham in her family’s grocery store. In a still widely debated incident, Carolyn claimed Till aggressively flirted and made inappropriate comments towards her, which led to her husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, J.W. Milam, kidnapping, torturing, and killing Till.
The case gained national interest when Till’s mutilated body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River, and his mother insisted on an open casket funeral to showcase the brutality of her son’s murder. Bryant and Milam were acquitted by an all-white jury after a five-day trial, sparking outrage and protests across the nation.
A Confession Made Too Late
In 2017, Timothy B. Tyson, a Duke University historian, revealed that Carolyn Bryant Donham admitted to him during an interview in 2008 that her initial claims against Emmett Till were not true. According to Tyson, Donham stated that what happened at the store was “not true, as far as Emmett grabbing her or making lewd remarks.” Donham’s admission served as a stark reminder of a racially-driven miscarriage of justice, even as it came more than six decades after the tragic murder.
Donham’s confession provoked renewed calls for justice for Till’s family and for a posthumous pardon for the 14-year-old boy. However, her death brings an inevitable sense of closure to one of the most infamous and heartbreaking episodes in American civil rights history.
